FAQ — Duduk, Lessons, and Instruments

Recording & Collaboration

Q: How do I hire you for a soundtrack or song?

A: Contact me via the Contact page or book through SoundBetter. Provide your track and specific requirements for a quote.

Buying a Duduk

Q: Do you sell instruments?

A: No. I can provide a list of reliable Armenian makers upon request.

Q: How do I choose a duduk?

A: Buy a professional instrument in the key of A with at least two reeds directly from established makers in Armenia.

  • Do not buy souvenir/decorative instruments.

  • Do not buy from Vernisage (Yerevan), Turkey, eBay, or Etsy.

Q: Can I find a quality duduk in Israel?

A: Rarely. The local market is inconsistent and mostly consists of low-quality souvenir trinkets.

Learning the Instrument

Q: Is the duduk easy to learn?

A: No. It is physically demanding and requires extreme persistence. Most people quit once they realize how difficult it is to produce a stable tone.

Q: Do you give lessons?

A: Only to those who show they are serious. The duduk is frustrating and physically demanding; if you aren't prepared to struggle through the first few months of unstable tones and physical exhaustion, we shouldn't start. I filter students early to ensure I am only working with people who actually intend to finish what they begin.

Q: Should my child learn the duduk?

A: No. Buy them a clarinet, a flute or a guitar. If they still want to tackle the duduk when they are adults, that is their choice. Spare them the frustration for now.

Q: Can I learn without music theory or notation?

Yes. Knowing notation and some basic music theory helps a lot, but you can also learn by ear through careful listening, imitation, and regular practice.

Q: Can I teach myself?

A: Yes, but you will likely develop poor habits that will be difficult to fix later.

Technical Basics

Q: How long until I can play a song?

A: You can play simple melodies after a few sessions. Playing  well takes years.

Q: Do I need circular breathing to play duduk?

A: No.

Q: Why does the sound change daily?

A: The reeds react to humidity, temperature, and how much you play.

Q: How important is the reed?

A: The reed is 90% of the sound. A bad reed makes a good duduk unplayable. Always have at least two high-quality reeds.
